Should I Go AMD or Nvidia for my Graphics Card?

Introduction

The current state of the graphics card market is tough. It could be easy to say that any next-gen card you can get your hands on is a good one. With that being said, there are many factors to take into account when deciding between the two manufacturers.

Nvidia has made headlines this year with the release of their 30-series graphics cards. Initially the 3070, 3080, and 3090 were launched in late 2020. Then the 3060, 3060 Ti, 3070 Ti, and 3080 Ti were released. To this day, there is speculation the manufacturer may release a model above the 3090.

AMD has also made headlines with the announcement of their 6000 series graphics cards, including the RX 6600, 6600 XT, 6700 XT, 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 XT were released.

Nvidia

Nvidia does have one selling point on their side, DLSS. By using this new “Deep Learning Super Sampling” technology, AI upscaling is able to increase frame rates. I have used this first hand on Cyberpunk 2077, and was surprised by the amount of FPS gain for an overall image quality that was reasonable (with the right settings).

Nvidia also holds most of the GPU market at the moment , and there are benefits to going with an industry leader. If you want to go with the underdog, however, continue reading this article.

AMD

This underdog manufacturer has been outperforming competitors in recent years, with their CEO taking both processor production and graphics card production to new heights. There are many promising signs that AMD can hold much larger market share in the future. There is also a trick up this manufacturer’s sleeve, FidelityFX SuperResolution. Working in a similar way to DLSS, it is a tool that developers can implement into their games. The difference with FidelityFX is that it is open-source technology. This could lead to more widespread adaptation in the future.

Market Constraints

At the moment, getting any graphics card for a decent price can be challenging. If you have a 10-series card or comparable, it could be beneficial to wait until 2022 when it will be easier to find a wider range of cards. I currently own an RTX 2070 super and plan on holding onto it for as long as I can, and DLSS can theoretically allow for future more-intensive games to have a higher FPS.
