AMD Refresh Incoming (Zen 4 and Beyond)

Introduction

AMD has announced their roadmap for the rest of this year as well as 2022, including their plans to release products based on next-gen Zen 4 and RDNA 3 architecture beginning next year. This year AMD plans on refreshing their Ryzen 5000 processor lineup. I believe the next-gen architecture is exciting. It is a glimpse into the future ahead of cutting edge technology. How their competitors may respond will be interesting as well.

Ryzen 5000 Update

In the short term, the company plans on updating their well received Ryzen 5000 CPUs. With the chip shortage becoming less of an issue and the price of computer hardware in general decreasing, I believe this is the perfect time for AMD to refresh this CPU family. It is not likely that these processors will be based on the Zen 4 microarchitecture, and they will instead focus those efforts on 2022 and beyond. Right now, we do not have any more information than that, but it is certain that demand will be strong on these future releases. Recently, more people have gained an interest in gaming computers and high-end hardware. As more information is released, I will update it in the blog.

Zen 4 Microarchitecture

In the future, processor releases by AMD will include the Zen 4 microarchitecture, which were first mentioned in 2018 and have been in development since. The processors, AMD claims, will be produced on a 5nm node produced by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). The future generation of high-end desktop and enthusiast market processors is codenamed “Warhol”. The server multiprocessors have the codename “Genoa”, and the mainstream desktop & mobile processors with GPU are codenamed “Rembrandt”. It is rumored that this microarchitecture will exclusively support DDR5, which was released in July of 2020. The “Genoa” processor lineup will have up to 96 cores with 192 threads, which is quite remarkable. Next, the “Warhol” lineup will feature up to 20 cores and 40 threads. Finally, the “Rembrandt” lineup will have up to 8 cores with 16 threads.

Thoughts

In the end, competition remains strong between AMD and Intel, and the Zen 4 release coming in 2022 will be a big step forward for the underdog company. We are very excited for these new releases, and hope you are too! As we hear more information we will update the blog.
